Niepoort is a Portuguese family wine company founded in 1842. Its story began in the Douro with Port, and the house remains closely associated with long ageing in the traditional lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia. Five generations of the family built the business before Dirk Niepoort joined his father Rolf in 1987 and opened a new, highly experimental chapter. In 1990 Niepoort began producing unfortified Douro wines as well as Port, helping demonstrate the potential of the region for fresh, terroir-driven dry wines. The company later expanded its work to Bairrada, Dão, Vinho Verde and other regions while retaining a strong preference for old vineyards, native varieties, acidity, lightness and wines that can evolve in bottle. Today Niepoort connects a historic Port-house identity with one of Portugal’s broadest and most curious fine-wine projects.

Redoma Branco is sourced from old Douro vineyards planted at high elevations on mica-schist soils. Its field blend includes Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho, Donzelinho Branco, Gouveio, Arinto and other traditional varieties. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in French oak barrels, followed by maturation in barrel. The 2023 is precise and mineral, showing citrus, green apple, stone fruit, aromatic herbs and honeysuckle. Oak contributes texture and discreet spice rather than obvious flavour, while energetic natural acidity produces a salty, mouthwatering finish. It can be enjoyed now with seafood and roast fish but has the structure to develop further in bottle.

Tiara is Niepoort’s distinctive interpretation of a rare, aristocratic Douro white. It is produced from old vines containing traditional varieties such as Códega do Larinho, Rabigato, Donzelinho Branco and Cercial, allowing the wine to express the complexity of mature mixed plantings rather than a single grape variety. The 2023 combines citrus and stone fruit with flowers, herbs and pronounced mineral detail. Its palate is elegant but concentrated, driven by fresh acidity and a long, saline and lightly savoury finish. This is a gastronomic white with considerable development potential, suited to shellfish, roast fish, poultry and mature cheeses.
