Producer at a glance

  • Middle Mosel, between Erden and Brauneberg.
  • About 95% Riesling, from steep slate vineyards.
  • Family estate with wine history dating to 1680.

Last reviewed: 2026-08-24.

Max Ferdinand Richter carries ten generations of wine history. Founded in 1680 as a wine export company, the estate is still owned by the same family that first purchased vineyards in Brauneberg in 1643. The Richter estate and its French baroque garden were built in 1774, and the winery buildings followed in 1880. The estate holds one of the Mosel's largest cellars of traditional oak Fuder casks. Today it is managed by Dr Dirk Max Ferdinand Richter, the ninth generation of the family, with the tenth generation, Constantin Max Ferdinand Richter, also working at the estate and continuing the family tradition. The winery believes that great wine comes from the vineyard rather than the cellar. Its daily work therefore centers on precision: careful hand labor on the Mosel's steep slate slopes, low yields, natural fertilization, and sustainable farming. All grapes are harvested by hand. Vinification begins with gentle pressing and continues with slow, temperature-controlled fermentation in traditional oak Fuder casks, preserving grape quality and expressing the character of individual vineyards. Whenever possible, the estate uses native yeasts and avoids chemical fining agents. Max Ferdinand Richter's 48 steep hectares are spread through the Middle Mosel between Erden and Brauneberg. Plantings are about 95% Riesling and 5% Pinot Blanc. The average vine age is around 40 years, with the oldest vines exceeding 120 years.
