Peter Lauer
Peter Lauer in Ayl, Saar, has been making wine for five generations. Riesling is the heart and passion of Weingut Peter Lauer, and the estate's vineyards include some of the Saar's finest steep slopes. Alongside the famous Ayler Kupp, the estate cultivates two other important sites: Saar Feilser, directly above the river, and Schonfels, an especially steep vineyard slightly upstream. More recently, the estate revived and recultivated Lambertskirch, a nearly forgotten vineyard close to Schonfels. Peter Lauer's white wines have long been considered among the Saar's best. Since 2013 the estate has been a member of the VDP, the association of Germany's quality wine estates. Its wines from VDP.GROSSE LAGEN, both dry and off-dry, are especially distinctive, and the winery also produces exceptional sparkling wines.

In ancient times, when a mighty river covered the Saar Valley, the water left behind sand, gravel, and stones. The young Saar River cut its way into its old riverbed and created the steep gravel slope called Saarfeils, which is located on a peninsula and planted with old vines. These vines are deeply rooted, perpendicular to the groundwater without hitting rock. Feils, a particularly warm site, whose soil is similar to the Médoc, impresses with its opulent flavor of fresh herbs. Below this Art Nouveau building, there is an extensive multi-story cellar. Those rooms are ideal for maturing sparkling wine using the Champagne method. Second fermentation in bottle and riddling by hand. The sparkling wines from Lauer mature at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in dark-vaulted rooms for about 12 to 20 months before they are disgorged.
