Maria Gomes is the Bairrada name for Fernão Pires, one of Portugal’s most aromatic native white grapes. Fermentation and maturation avoid overt oak influence, allowing the fruit and old-vine texture to take centre stage. The 2023 shows white and stone fruit, pear, citrus and saline notes, supported by sharp acidity and a creamy, firm texture from fine-lees contact. Vinha Pan is one of Luís Pato’s important single vineyards, associated with clay-limestone soils and the Baga grape. The sparkling expression applies Pato’s experience with hyperoxygenation and lees ageing to produce a serious, gastronomic espumante with comparatively little reliance on added sulphur. The wine combines Baga’s firm acidity with red apple, wild strawberry, citrus peel and savoury mineral notes. Extended bottle ageing should contribute a fine mousse, creamy texture and touches of brioche, while the finish remains dry and incisive. It is particularly suited to roast poultry, charcuterie, hard cheeses and substantial fish dishes.
