António Madeira grew up in Paris in a Portuguese family whose roots lie in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela. Fascinated by the Dão during visits to his grandparents, he began searching the region in 2010 for the old vineyards once regarded locally as its finest sites. His holdings now comprise numerous small plots around several mountain villages, many planted between 50 and 120 years ago. The vineyards grow mainly on high-altitude granite soils and preserve a remarkable diversity of indigenous grapes in traditional field blends. Madeira farms organically and biodynamically, ferments with indigenous yeasts and uses very little sulphur, seeking transparent wines defined by freshness, salinity and mineral tension. His work has helped revive both the old vineyards and the distinctive mountain identity of the Serra da Estrela.
