Alois Lageder is a family-owned winery in Magrè on the Alto Adige Wine Road. Its story began in 1823, when Johann Lageder combined his work as a wagon maker with trading wine. Later generations acquired vineyards and began making their own wines; the purchase of the Löwengang estate in 1934 established the winery at its present home. Today Alois Clemens, Helena and Anna Lageder represent the sixth generation. Diversity is central to the estate's identity. Its vineyards extend through Alto Adige from roughly 200 to 1,000 metres above sea level, across volcanic porphyry, weathered primary rock rich in quartz, slate and mica, and limestone and dolomite soils. The winery works with about 30 grape varieties, including Manzoni Bianco, to express the region's Alpine-Mediterranean contrasts. The family began converting its vineyards to biodynamic agriculture in 2004 and released its first biodynamically certified wines in 2008. Its 55 hectares of family vineyards are farmed biodynamically, while around 60 partner growers cultivate another 85 hectares. Since the 2024 vintage, all of those partner vineyards have been farmed organically or biodynamically as well. Animals, cover crops, orchards and a vegetable garden form part of an approach built around soil health and biodiversity. All grapes are harvested by hand, and cellar work favours spontaneous fermentation, restrained additions and gentle handling in stainless steel, wood and cement.
